With less than 24 hours before the start of training camp, there does not appear to be any progression on a new deal for Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.Mayfield and his agent had previously set their deadline to finalize a deal to be the start of training camp on July 29. This was done to allow Mayfield the ability to focus on his football.However, the Buccaneers have not seemed to be in a rush to ink a new deal for Mayfield – who has one year remaining on his contract.According to Tampa beat writer Rick Stroud, Mayfield will play for the Buccaneers on his expiring contract – paving the way for his free agency.Stroud adds that Mayfield will earn at least $40million this season before hitting the open market. However, Mayfield ‘also feels he helped them too, when they needed a starting quarterback in the post-Tom Brady era.’The value of the franchise tag isn’t calculated until just before the start of free agency. It’s currently projected to rise to roughly $50million in 2027. Mayfield is not the only Tampa Bay player who has grown frustrated over the lack of progress on a new deal.On Monday, Bucs star defensive lineman Vita Vea requested a trade after he wasn’t able to come to an agreement on a contract.Vea, who was a star on the team’s Super Bowl LV squad, was a hold-in at mandatory minicamp. He participated in classroom instruction, but wasn’t a full participant in drills and on-field work.
