The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have cut veteran quarterback Jake Browning and handed their back-up role to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels in a surprise move.Daniels wasn’t selected in the 2026 NFL Draft after six college seasons at Kansas but was picked up by the Bucs as an undrafted free agent on May 8.He has spent the past three months fighting for an unlikely roster spot in Tampa Bay, and NFL insider Ian Rapoport now reports that he has achieved the near-impossible and earned the role of back-up to Baker Mayfield.That is terrible news for Browning, meanwhile, who has been released just five months after signing a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the team.Browning, 30, has spent the entirety of his NFL career as a back-up quarterback, mainly to Joe Burrow at the Cincinnati Bengals.Over the past three seasons he has been a semi-regular starter for the team due to Burrow’s injury issues, and he has 17 appearances across the past three years. He’s shown a lot. We’re going to go back and evaluate the film.’When Daniels arrived at the team, his deal included a signing bonus of just $25,000.He has since appeared in all three of Tampa Bay’s preseason games, completing 61% of his passes for 239 yards, also rushing for a further 37 yards and a touchdown.
