Having picked out Mbeumo with an inviting cross which he glanced narrowly wide in the first half, it was no surprise to see his trickery earn the penalty that enabled the Cameroon international to put United level.Lacey’s flick bamboozled Jorge Castillo into tripping him up, and Mbeumo sent replacement goalkeeper Salvi Esquivel the wrong way from the spot.A keen boxer before pursuing a career in football, Lacey showed his combative side with a meaty challenge on Ortiz before half-time which left the Atletico scorer in a heap asking why he hadn’t been given a free-kick.We’ll see less of United’s academy players as the World Cup stars continue returning for pre-season, but Lacey and the Fletcher twins are expected to remain an integral part of the first-team squad in the remaining games against Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds and AC Milan.Jack Fletcher also made a big impression against Atletico as he set up the second goal, seizing on a loose pass to intercept and go past his man before crossing for Mbeumo who beat Esquivel to the ball to score his second. Altay Bayindir’s United career appears to be coming to an end after he was left on the benchGabriel gets his chanceIt may only have been a pre-season friendly, but the United fans among a 21,000 crowd in Stockholm will be able to say that they saw JJ Gabriel make his United debut alongside another rising star from the academy, Jim Thwaites.Both teenagers came on in the 82nd minute, replacing Mbeumo and Andrey Santos, to play the final 11 minutes against Atletico.There is huge excitement around Gabriel in particular, who doesn’t even turn 16 until October. The youngster dubbed Kid Messi looked eager to get on the ball and finally got his chance in the 90th minute. Faced with three defenders, Gabriel twisted and turned in the Atletico penalty box and saw his shot blocked. Moments later, he tried again but was forced to the ground.United fans will be hoping to see plenty more of Gabriel and Thwaites, a gifted 18-year-old midfielder, in future and this was just the start.Carrick said afterwards: ‘The senior players looking strong and fit, and the younger players are doing really well. Jimmy and JJ coming on at the end are two younger players again. They had a first taste for it for us, so it’s great for me to be in a position to give opportunities to the boys.’Mount peaks earlyOne of the most pleasing things for Carrick in pre-season has been the midfield partnership between Mason Mount and new £50million signing Santos.While the Brazilian has been playing a predominantly defensive role in front of the back-four, Mount has been given more licence to get forward and has embraced the opportunity.The 27-year-old has had a frustrating time with injury at United since arriving from Chelsea in 2023, and he is looking to prove that he can be a key part of the club’s midfield rebuild this summer.With Kobbie Mainoo and United’s other summer signing Youri Tielemans still to return to action after the World Cup, competition for places will be fierce – even more so if the club sign another midfielder. But Mount has looked sharp in pre-season, getting forward well and helping Santos out in defence when needed as well.It’s a sign of his standing at United under Carrick, and how he has been mentoring some of the younger players, that he wore the captain’s armband in the second-half against Rosenborg. He showed a little naivety towards the end when Thomas Lemar’s pass inside him almost set up an equaliser for Arnau Sola, but overall he will be pleased with this display.‘Firstly, I’m a centre-back, I’m just playing there because Diogo and Mazraoui aren’t coming back yet,’ said Yoro afterwards. ‘I prefer centre-back, but if you can play two or three positions I’ll take it. The coach tried me at right-back and I’m doing well so it’s good for me and the team.‘Atletico are a really good team. They were pressing at the beginning and we had to adapt a bit, but we did really well.’Reds roll onAs United reached the halfway point of pre-season ahead of their Premier League opener at Hull City in three weeks’ time, Carrick stepped up the workload by making just one change at half-time – taking off Diallo on his return to action – and not making any more substitutions until the 73rd minute when Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Lacey and Patrick Dorgu were replaced by Harry Amass, Dan Armer, Ethan Williams and Zirkzee. Gabriel and Thwaites replaced Mbeumo and Santos towards the end.Carrick revealed before the game that he will have ‘five or six’ of his World Cup stars back next week as they begin their fitness work at Carrington, and it’s possible that some of them could feature in the friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg next weekend.The United boss was delighted with the character his players showed in coming from behind to beat Atletico, saying: ‘It’s a long season and we’re going to have to overcome some challenges and adapt at certain times, so we’re trying to put things in place that will take us to the full distance.’It’s great to see the boys getting on so well; the spirit, the camaraderie.
