The two migrants who allegedly orchestrated a string of robberies at the homes of high-profile NFL stars are finally set to face justice in America.According to the New York Post, federal prosecutors in Florida have formally requested that Argentina extradites Chilean nationals Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, 21, and Bastian Jimenez Freraut, 28, back to the US for prosecution after they fled the country.The pair made their escape following a series of burglaries which targeted the properties of NFL players, such as Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow, while they were playing on the road, federal authorities claim.They were arrested in Buenos Aires in May after another robbery at the home of former Argentine tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro, where they allegedly got away with jewelry, medals and rackets.Targets also included NBA players such as Luka Doncic, Ja Morant and Mike Conley Jr.Zuniga Cartes and Jimenez Freraut are wanted on conspiracy charges in the US in connection to the international crime ring accused of stealing from the athletes. It is believed they stole a minimum of $3million in total.Items stolen from Kelce – while the Chiefs were playing away at the New Orleans Saints in October 2024 – reportedly included the jersey he wore when he won the Super Bowl for the first time with Kansas City.In 2024, the NFL issued a security alert to teams and the players’ union following the burglaries involving the homes of Mahomes and Kelce.According to the FBI , organized crime groups from South America used publicly available information and social media to track athletes’ habits and travel. The groups used technology allowing them to bypass alarm systems, block wireless internet connections and disable devices, cover security cameras and hide their identities. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s property was also burglarized by the group Ignacio Zuniga Cartes (second left) and Bastian Jimenez Freraut (far right) were part of the group accused of entering and robbing the homes of multiple star athletesIn February, seven Chilean citizens were charged in a federal court in Florida with conspiracy to transport stolen property across state lines, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.Zuniga Cartes and Jimenez Freraut are also charged with aggravated robbery by forced entry in Argentina and remain in custody in the notorious Marcos Paz prison in Buenos Aires province, which houses major drug traffickers and sex offenders.Prosecutors believe they entered Argentina in April, with the evidence against them believed to be ‘robust to say the least’.Under Argentine law, they could face three to 10 years in prison if found guilty. The South American country’s law also states that defendants must have matters dealt with there before any extradition request can be fulfilled.
