The family of a former Brazilian Olympian is asking for help after the long distance runner disappeared from their home.Daniel Nascimento, a marathoner who competed at the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, left his home in a suburb of Sao Paulo on June 19 and has not returned since, according to an Instagram post from his mother.The post – which his mother, Valdirene de Paula Ferreira, posted on Monday – asked for information regarding his whereabouts.’His name is Daniel Nascimento. Better known [by the nickname] Armero,’ she wrote in Portuguese. ‘He was a marathon runner (he presents [with] psychological issues).’According to Ferreira, her son left home in Paraguacu Paulista around 7:00pm on June 19 with a black backpack. He was always a good boy,’ she reportedly said. ‘Sometimes I used to take him out for a run. ‘He would do some training sessions in secret in the middle of the sugarcane fields. I think he really missed the routine of being an athlete.’A thousand things go through your mind as a mother. I think I’ve lost about 10 kilos. Daniel’s siblings are also very worried. We just want him to show up.’Nascimento is the fastest marathoner in South America, but was banned for competing for five years after he tested positive for three different steroids a month before the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The ban took him out of those games as well as the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. His biggest accomplishment was finishing third in the 2022 Seoul Marathon, running a 2:04:51. That year, he also led the New York City Marathon for over 20 miles before collapsing due to exhaustion on a hot race day.
