After mysteriously no-showing to a crucial road series against the Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was spotted at a casino in his home town.Marte had been spotted playing roulette at Talking Stick Resort and Casino in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Friday evening. The casino is located near the team’s spring training facility at Salt River Fields. At the same time he was spotted, Marte’s teammates were fighting for their playoff lives as they sit two games back of the final National League wildcard spot.As a result of his going AWOL back in Boston, Marte was placed on the team’s ‘restricted list’ by team manager Torey Lovullo. Days later, he was placed on the 10-day injured list after an MRI uncovered an injury in his knee.Speaking to reporters after the team won 9-0 over the Cincinnati Reds, Lovullo addressed the video of Marte out gambling.’He’s free to do whatever he wants. That’s how I look at it,’ the manager told reporters. Diamondbacks are outraged after second baseman Ketel Marte was seen at a casino Marte was seen sitting at a roulette table at Talking Stick Resort and Casino in Scottsdale Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said that Marte is ‘free to do whatever he wants”As long as he wakes up tomorrow morning and posts and gets his work done at Salt River, which I am certain he will, that’s all that matters to me right now.’Lovullo’s seemingly carefree response may come from the fact that players on the IL are not required to attend games. Players undergoing rehab also typically do their recovery work earlier in the day. But Lovullo still harbors some ill feelings about the situation with Marte in Boston: ‘Once I saw what was unfolding, I became extremely frustrated,’ the manager told reporters on Friday. ‘I felt betrayed. And that’s a whole different type of pain and frustration. But I’m through that.’Marte, Lovullo, team general manager Mike Hazen and Marte’s agent held a meeting on Thursday to get a better understanding of the situation.Shortly after the meeting ended, Marte was placed on the IL. Lovullo didn’t divulge many details of the meeting, other than revealing that Marte still held frustration over his knee.’There’s right ways to handle things and wrong ways to handle things,’ Lovullo said. ‘I think the conclusion that was drawn up yesterday was that we could have been better. Ketel could have been better, specifically. Admittedly so.’ Marte recently went AWOL on a road trip to Boston and was placed on the ‘restricted list’ as a result of his unexplained absence. Later, he was placed on the 10-day IL for a knee injury. Lovullo admitted that he ‘felt betrayed’ by Marte’s actions, but still has ‘love’ for the player Meanwhile, Diamondbacks teammates like Kevin Ginkel want to hear Marte’s side of thingsLovullo added: ‘I want to manage baseball games. I want to do what I love doing between the white lines and not have to answer these types of questions. … I don’t love the drama that follows this ballclub. I want to be a good baseball team, and we’ve got to figure this out.’In spite of the frustration of the situation, Lovullo said he ‘love[s]’ Marte and that his relationship with the player ‘is not going to change.’ Marte is the longest-tenured member of the Diamondbacks and is generally a well-liked figure in the D-Backs clubhouse. However, some of those same teammates have expressed confusion over the situation surrounding his departure.’There’s really no explanation for it,’ relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel told reporters, describing the situation as ‘disappointing’ but also expressing his wish for Marte to be physically and mentally healthy. He also made it clear he and his teammates would like an explanation and Marte’s side of the story: ‘I think it’d be nice to hear it, for sure,’ Ginkel said. ‘I think a lot of players are kind of frustrated about how it happened. But first and foremost, it’s him getting his knee right and mentally being in a good place to where he can come back and help contribute.’
