Shane Nolan has explained why he changed his name after he decided to drop his dad’s surname back in 2017. The star, 37, who is the son of Coleen Nolan and Shane Richie, used to go by Richie Jr, but revealed he chose to change it after he grew tired of the constant comparisons to his famous EastEnders star father. On Wednesday Shane, 62, denied drink-driving following an incident in which police were called when he pulled into a petrol station and appeared to argue with staff about vaping on the forecourt.And on the same day the Nolan’s Uncensored podcast shared a clip on Instagram addressing his son’s name change.Shane began: ‘See, I’d like to clear this up because people go “Oh you changed the name, why do you not like your dad?”‘No, I chatted with my dad, but actually at the time, Richie Jr was a real struggle for me because everywhere I went I was being compared to my dad. Like people Ciara’s [his sister’s] age don’t know.’Shane added: ‘It took a while to get going and I did it in support for you, but not really. I love you, but…’You got more gigs out of it?’ teased Ciara. ‘I didn’t,’ replied Shane. ‘No, for about two or three years, I didn’t. Was Richie Jr you got booked, didn’t matter if you were sh*t or whatever. ‘Now I much prefer Nolan. I love being a Nolan.’Meanwhile last month Richie was arrested after he drove his white Hyundai onto the forecourt, seemingly with a flat tyre.Video taken by staff showed him being told he could not smoke on the premises after he was spotted with the large vape.Holding the device, he insisted: ‘It’s not smoking’ and then added ‘This is not a vape.’After staff told him the vape ‘is a risk’, the footage showed him reaching inside his car and, with his back to the employee, saying: ‘I don’t give a f***.’As the manager of the petrol station phoned police, claiming Richie was being ‘aggressive’, the soap star told the man filming: ‘Someone’s coming to change my tyre.’Police arrived at the forecourt just after 11pm on July 29. Richie was arrested and later charged with drink-driving.But Colchester Magistrates’ Court today heard the defendant, who appeared under his real name of Roche, would be disputing the prosecution’s evidence about the comments he made.Shane’s son previously took a swipe at his arrest as he poked fun at the incident during his show with his mum Coleen Nolan, called This Is Me, at Bush Hall in Shepherd’s Bush in August.Before his famous mum took to the stage, he reportedly joked with the audience: ‘The more you drink the funnier I get. Is anyone having a drink tonight? But remember don’t drink and drive. Don’t do it.’The Sun revealed that as the crowd heckled him, he continued: ‘What? What? I am driving home… there is lots to talk about. What am I doing after the show? I am taking my eight month old baby and my beautiful girlfriend back to Staffordshire.’That is what I am doing. I won’t be driving. I am drinking tonight.’Shane also addressed his choice to drop his dad’s surname, after switching his surname to Nolan back in 2017 when Coleen took part in Celebrity Big Brother.Coleen married Shane Richie in 1990, and they had two sons before splitting up in 1997 and divorcing in 1999.Shane Snr and Coleen married in 1990. Their relationship lasted for seven years before Shane cheated, leading to their divorce in 1999.He joked: ‘I used to be called Shane Richie Jnr and I changed it to Shane Nolan. A lot of people have asked me why and it is because I just go with the parent who is most famous to get paid more. I have to admit my mum is smashing it.’
