Sam Taylor-Johnson has opened up about her 23-year age gap with husband Aaron. The couple met on the set of Nowhere Boy in 2008 when Aaron was just 18 and Sam was 42. They didn’t start dating until they finished the project, where a ‘deep connection’ was formed. While many have been fascinated by the pair’s difference in age, Sam, now 59, has insisted that she doesn’t really feel the age gap with her 36-year-old husband. Asked if having a younger partner helps her maintain a youthful outlook, Sam mused: ‘It doesn’t really feel like that. Because, as he said to me the other day, he’s been doing his job for 30 years.’ Aaron made his stage debut aged six, and left school at 15 to focus on his career.Sam continued: ‘He has a more uniquely wise perspective on things than I do. I feel like he’s so much more grounded than I could ever be. It’s a good balance for my fractious, insane energy.’ Sam Taylor-Johnson, 59, said she doesn’t feel the age gap with husband Aaron, 36, because ‘he’s been working for 30 years’ as she praised the actor for keeping her ‘grounded’ (pictured in 2024)During her interview with The Sunday Times magazine, Sam added: ‘We’re quite similar in our energy. I can say, “Aaron, should we get a puppy?” And he’ll go, “Yeah, great idea. Let’s get one now?” We both have that sort of mad energy.’ The film-maker also praised her husband’s ‘beautiful body, mind and spirit’ and said he proved to be the perfect model for her photographs. After falling in love in 2008, the two were engaged a year later and tied the knot in 2012, before going on to welcome two daughters Wylda, 16, and Romy, 14.Their family also includes Sam’s eldest daughters Angelica, 29, and Jessie, 19, whom she shares with ex-husband Jay Jopling.Sam previously spoke about falling for Aaron on the set of Nowhere Boy, but insisted nothing happened until the movie wrapped. She said: ‘I managed to hold off really until almost the end of the film. We weren’t even together then. Maybe feelings were there but un-acted upon.’She also reflected on the ‘intense’ interest surrounding their relationship because ‘people want to understand things when they can’t’.Speaking in 2024 on BBC Radio 4’s This Cultural Life, Sam said: ‘I guess that interest was more when we got together, which was now 14 years – at the beginning, was quite intense.’And that sort of fascination, because he’s younger than me, which you know, we couldn’t really fathom the fascination. But I guess it’s sort of gone away a little bit.’Mostly when I’m doing press and things like this it sort of resurges a little bit. But yeah, I guess people want to understand things when they can’t.’They want to pick up art when they can’t fathom what a certain love story that doesn’t fit in a box is.’ The couple met on the set of Nowhere Boy in 2008 when Aaron was just 18 and Sam was 42. They didn’t start dating until they finished the project (pictured in 2009) Sam has also been asked if the couple’s age gap ever shows in terms of different interests or reference points. The director told The Guardian’s Saturday magazine: ‘No, it never does. I mean, it’s coming up now because you’re asking.’And it comes up on the outside perspective of people who don’t know us, because I guess people will always.’We’re a bit of an anomaly, but it’s that thing: after 14 years you just think, surely by now it doesn’t really matter?’Sam went on to reveal she never hesitated about getting involved with a much younger man.She said: ‘If I had been cynical for a second, it wouldn’t have worked. If I had questioned anything, it would never have worked. I’m quite instinctual. I’ve gone feet first into everything in my life. I’m always, ‘This seems amazing’, and I jump straight in and go through the experience, whether good or bad.’It’s definitely a ‘f***it, let’s go with it’ approach. And I’m a great believer that the heart overrides everything. Love conquers all.’
