Phil Collins reveals he’s finally mended his 24-year feud with Paul McCartney after he apologised for blasting the star for ‘patronising’ exchange

Phil Collins has revealed he’s finally made amends with Sir Paul McCartney, after publicly blasting the star for their ‘patronising’ exchange. The music legend, 75, was embroiled in over two decades of tension with the Beatles star, after an icy exchange between them while they were playing at the Queen’s Golden Jubilee concert in 2002.Phil shared that he felt ‘patronised’ when he asked Paul to sign a copy of a Beatles memoir backstage, and later detailed their meeting in his 2016 memoir. He said that Paul emailed him to brand his comments ‘sanctimonious’, but earlier this year the musician reached out again, about getting his help for a charity auction.Phil shared that during the call he apologised to Paul for the comments, and they ‘kissed and made up’.He said: ‘It was the Queen’s Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, and I was the house drummer for everybody, except for McCartney and except for Brian Wilson. Phil Collins has revealed he’s finally made amends with Sir Paul McCartney, after publicly blasting the star for their ‘patronising’ exchange’They had their own bands but I played with everybody else and I loved it, I was like a pig in s**t. We rehearsed for two weeks.’Everybody was coming in to play the stuff and it was great. From Ozzy to Clapton to Ray Davies, it was everybody.’Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Phil added: ‘McCartney had his own band, which I understood. He’d just come off tour. ‘I was backstage during the day before the show, actually. We had a rehearsal at Buckingham Palace, and I had a first edition Hunter Davies book [on The Beatles], which was a very, quite rare, first edition. I’d been given it by Jill, Lily’s mum. And I took it to the rehearsal so Paul could sign it.’So I was sitting on the side of the stage, and Paul came up behind with Heather Mills, who he was married to at that point, and I said, ”Paul, could you sign this?” And he said, ”Oh yeah. Yeah”. ‘And he said, he probably didn’t mean it like it sounded, but he said, ‘He’s a big Beatles fan is our little Phil.’ ‘And I thought, ‘You a***hole’. I couldn’t help it. That’s just what I thought. I probably made more of it than he meant, I did make more of it. But when I was writing the book, and I wanted to write how I felt about certain things.’Admitting he felt patronised, Phil continued that he wrote about the exchange in his memoir, adding: ‘And I knew Paul. This wasn’t the first time I’d met him. I played on one of his albums.  The music legend was embroiled in over two decades of tension with the Beatles star, after an icy exchange between them while they were playing at the Golden Jubilee concert in 2002’I played live with him with the Prince’s Trust. I’d given him an award at an awards show in London, so I kind of knew him. ‘So I was kind of surprised at that particular tone of reply. So anyway, I wrote about it in the book.’Phil said Paul emailed him after seeing the anecdote in an interview promoting his book, and he told Piers: ‘So he hadn’t read it in the book, I don’t think, but he read it in the interview. ‘And he wrote me an email saying, ‘It’s a bit sanctimonious. What’s all that about?’ Which I didn’t reply to. ‘So years went by and there’s things on YouTube, ‘Why does Paul McCartney hate Phil Collins?’ And it just came about because of this phrase, you know.’He said after years of frostiness, the Beatles legend reached out to him after asking his team for his phone number. Phil continued: ‘Anyway, I get a message from the office not long ago, about a month or two ago, saying Paul wanted my number. So is that okay? So he calls me on my phone. ‘And the reason he called me, I found out, was because I’d written letters to everybody that I’d played with for items to donate to the King’s Trust auction, of which most people came back with some wonderful things. ‘So the auction will be fantastic. It’s in November. All the proceeds will go to the King’s Trust.’And he said, ”While we’re on the phone”, And I thought, ”oh, here we go.” So he said, ”What is all this about?” ‘I said, ”I wish I’d never said it, Paul, I wish I’d never said it”. He said, ”I thought we were good, you know.” I mean, it’s not fair for me to tell you what he said to me but that’s basically the gist of the conversation.’So we kissed and made up. I said I was sorry… obviously this had been bugging him because he likes to be liked, as we all do, you know, and maybe him more than some other people. ‘But we all like to be liked. And I understand that. And we kissed and made up.’Phil admitted the comment from Paul he originally took offence at was being called ‘little’, and he added: ‘I don’t know if he gave it much thought, I don’t know if that’s good or bad!’During the interview, Phil also reflected on his battle with alcoholism, and said his daughter Lily burst into tears over fears he would die from his drink struggles. The singer almost drank himself to death two years ago and ended up on life support in a Swiss hospital, with his family travelling over to make some ‘tough decisions’. The Genesis star is father to Joely, 53, daughter of his first wife Andrea Bertorelli who he adopted, Simon, 50, with Andrea, Lily, 37, with his second wife Jill Tavelman, and Nic, 25, and Mathew, 21, with his third wife Orianne Cevey. For the full interview, watch Piers Morgan Uncensored on YouTube.
