‘None of Mick’s children are into what he’s into’: Insiders tell ALISON BOSHOFF which of Jagger’s sons is his ‘golden boy’ and reveal the VERY un-rock ‘n’ roll reason why

Mick Jagger, now 82, clearly remembers watching England win the 1966 World Cup final. The Rolling Stones were in a recording studio in Los Angeles and Jagger broke away to catch the game on a Spanish language TV station, on a black and white set. This time around, he has been watching and cheering the England team in person. He was in the stands in Miami when they beat Norway last Saturday and there again in Atlanta on Wednesday night, the devastation etched on his face when Argentina snatched England’s dreams away in the final minutes. And with him were three of his sons – James, 40, Lucas, 27, and Deveraux, nine. Three boys by three different mothers, born decades apart and yet their bond with Jagger, known to them as ‘Pa’, was touchingly evident as they celebrated and then consoled each other.James is Mick’s eldest son from his marriage to model Jerry Hall. Lucas was the result of a fling with Brazilian model Luciana Morad in the late 90s, which became the straw that broke Jerry’s long-suffering back and ended their marriage. And he shares Deveraux (known as Devi) with his girlfriend Melanie Hamrick, 38, a former ballerina, and was 73 when he was born. The only boy missing from the line-up on Wednesday was his son Gabriel, 28, who is James’s full brother. There is an unmistakable Jagger ‘look’ to all of them: a pout and fullness of lip and a certain swagger. Yet, I’m told they are all very different characters, with different interests and their own unique experiences of being born the son of a rock god. Mick Jagger was in the stands in Miami when England beat Norway last Saturday, alongside his sons Deveraux, James and Lucas Mick and Brazilian model Luciana Morad have a son together, Lucas, who is the only one of the rock star’s sons who has graduated from university Former ballerina Melanie Hamrick has a son with Mick called Deveraux (known as Devi) – their son was born when Mick was 73As a friend observes: ‘I guess it is the luck of the draw but none of Mick’s children are into what he is into. He loves books, movies and ballet. He loves the landed gentry and yet none of his children have married someone with a title. He loves cricket and theatre but they don’t go. None of them go, ever.’Football, I’m told, is the one thing they all agree on. And as none of the boys’ mothers or sisters are interested in the sport, it’s become dedicated father/son time.So how does Jagger relate to his boys, born 31 years apart? Many will be surprised to learn that the ‘golden boy’ is Lucas. The reason? He is the only one of Mick’s sons who has graduated from university. Jagger, a bright man, went to Dartford Grammar School, before winning a place at the London School of Economics to study finance and accounting. While he ended up ditching his degree for a life of rock ’n’ roll, he has always had the highest regard for academic achievement.Lucas, who looks the most like his famous father, was raised predominantly in New York by his mother and graduated from New York University in 2024 with a degree in literary arts.Mick was there at his graduation, posing proudly alongside Lucas in gown and mortar board, flanked by the still very glamorous Luciana. ‘Mick has wanted that for all his kids. Lucas is golden as a result,’ said the friend.Despite his degree, Lucas seems to be going down the influencer and model route, recently serving as the face of the eyewear brand Revo in a Rolling Stones-themed campaign.Mick’s eldest son James went to private boarding school Stowe but was not very academically inclined. He was later in a band, Turbogeist, and, ten years ago, began to get into acting, starring in the US period drama series Vinyl, co-created by his father.Gabriel didn’t go to university either but trained as a journalist and wrote for the Times newspaper for a couple of years, before leaving to run his own UK media company. ‘Gabriel has an interest in the arts and so does Lucas, so that’s something,’ says the friend.Mick also has four daughters: Karis, 55, with actress and singer Marsha Hunt; Jade, 54, from his marriage to Nicaraguan-born human rights advocate Bianca, and Lizzie, 42, and Georgia May, 34 with Jerry. And it was Karis who made Daddy very proud when she graduated from prestigious Yale university in 1992 with a degree in history. In a rare interview about parenthood in 2023, Jagger addressed the difficulties of being a much older father. ‘You get a bit out of practice – it’s not like riding a bike,’ he said.‘The more children you have, the more laissez-faire you get about them, to be honest. And it depends on the child. They have their own personalities and you can mould them to a certain extent, but you see their likes and dislikes, and encourage them to do things they gravitate towards.’He added: ‘It’s fun to have children, at any age. But if you’re working, and always away, you don’t get to enjoy it quite as much.’For this reason, his experience as a much-older dad to Devi has been quite different to that with his older sons.It is all very different from the childhoods of his four children with Jerry, when the singer was away on tour for months, or even years, on end.In contrast, Devi is with his father pretty much ‘all the time’. Gabriel Jagger, who was not at the football with his father, trained as a journalist and wrote for the Times newspaper and is said to have ‘an interest in the arts’ Mick, who once epitomised the hedonistic values of the 60s, has always been a hands-on father – such as his doting appearing in the football stands with his boys this weekThe friend adds that it was no surprise to see Devi in the crowd at the England games despite being so young because Mick is so proud of him.‘Devi comes with Mick everywhere now,’ they said. ‘He speaks French and Mick speaks to him in French as they spend a lot of time at Mick’s place in Paris but also because Mick always has intellectual ambitions for his children.’It is interesting to note, however, that Mick, who once epitomised the hedonistic values of the 60s, has always been a hands-on father with the exception of Karis, with whom he only properly connected when she was 12.In 1998, having surprised Jagger with news of her pregnancy (and thrown a grenade into his marriage), Luciana was astonished that he was keen go along to baby scans and later would sing nursery rhymes down the phone to Lucas. He then helped him with his homework over Skype. She said in an interview: ‘During my pregnancy, I imagined a future as a single mother. I was wrong, Mick was always present.’Of all his children, professionally, Georgia has been the most financially successful, working as a model. This was despite Jagger’s attempts to steer her away from the catwalk towards university. The friend said: ‘None of Jerry’s kids have had a big career aside from Georgia. My understanding is that Mick pays an allowance to all of them but it’s kind of survival rations rather than a fortune.’James was most recently seen in the 2024 film Waltzing With Brando, alongside Billy Zane.Gabriel, meanwhile, has had some success as a film producer and has been married to Anouk, a Swiss socialite, since 2021.No doubt all of Jagger’s endeavours as a father have been observed, wryly, by his bandmate Keith Richards. When it first emerged that Melanie was expecting in 2016, he commented with typical barbed wit: ‘Mick’s a randy old bastard. You can’t be a father at that age. Those poor kids!’But seeing Jagger the doting dad in the football stands with his boys this week, Keith might just be eating his words.
