Michael Owen has confessed he’s ‘never told his children he loves them’ as he offered insight into his struggles with sharing his emotions.The former England star, 46, has shared a glimpse into his life as a father-of-four in his new fly-on-the-wall docuseries, and he’s now admitted he’s far from the type of parent to dish out ‘soft love’ to his family.Meet The Owens follows a year in the life of Michael, wife Louise, and their children Gemma, James, Emily and Jessica, as they juggle a horse racing business and chaotic home life.Michael has now revealed that while his four children are ‘the dearest things to him’, he isn’t one to gush about them.He said: ‘I never ever tell my kids I love them. I don’t say anything like that.’I just assume my actions would show them that I love them. It’s a bad thing. It’s not healthy,’ before Michael added: ‘But if you say it all the time, does it mean anything?’Kissing your kid, sending them to school, no matter what they do you just keep saying well done, and if they do rubbish, [saying] ‘Oh, you’re trying awfully hard.’ No, I like tough love.’I’m not trying to condone it, because I would love to be a bit soft.’I think it comes with age as well, you get better when you’re old, you’ve got time to think a bit more and you realise the true meaning of things.’I’m definitely getting softer, but still not soft enough to say something like that.’During the same interview, Michael also confessed that he thinks anyone who watches films is a ‘weirdo’.Asked to share his ‘biggest turn-off,’ he said: ‘People that watch films. You’re all weirdos.’Michael has also revealed he’s ‘never drunk a cup of tea or coffee’ as he ‘doesn’t like’ hot drinks.The admission was shared by his pal Peter Crouch on his podcast in 2023, with the former Liverpool star saying: ‘Michael Owen’s never had a tea or coffee in his life. He’s never had one. He doesn’t like it. ‘He’s watched three films in his life – genuinely – and he’s never had tea or coffee. Doesn’t enjoy films, or tea or coffee.’Michael also said in 2018: ‘I’ve never drunk a cup of tea in my life, or coffee for that matter. But I’ve just learnt how to make one.’On Meet The Owens, Michael addressed being the subject of widespread mockery after he told a bizarre story about building up his confidence.In 2023, the former England player became a meme after discussing his drive for success, saying he was ‘brave’ enough as a child to risk throwing an apple in a bin at his family home, knowing he might miss.The comments instantly went viral, with many taking to social media to poke fun at the star, or recreate videos of themselves throwing apple cores in wastepaper bins. Now Michael, 46, has addressed the backlash in his upcoming Prime reality series, Meet The Owens, which charts his new life as a race horse owner. On the show, Michael was heading to record a podcast episode with his pal Wayne Rooney, which led to him reflecting on his last ill-fated comments. ‘It became a meme and everybody laughed at it,’ Michael sighed. ‘That’s cool because the vast majority of people who laughed at it, don’t get it. And that’s why they’re bloody muppets.”Probably still living in their mum and dad’s house when they’re 40 years of age, it’s like who’s a***d?’ he concluded with a wry smile. Michael’s parents Terry and Jeanette Owen then chimed in, saying: ‘People twist things, like this apple in the bin, “big deal”. ‘Life was a competition, he always liked to win everything… and I would go mad because it would hit the wallpaper!’Prime Video’s Meet The Owens is a six-part docuseries, which is being produced by Whisper.
