Maura Higgins has revealed she overcame feeling ‘really unwell’ to complete a ‘tough’ week of training on Dancing With The Stars, where she narrowly avoided elimination The former Love Island star made it to the quarter-finals after admitting she found learning the Jive for her Tinkerbell-inspired routine to be ‘hell’ ‘I came into this experience knowing I wasn’t a dancer, a performer or an athlete, but I wanted to challenge myself, step outside my comfort zone and give something completely new my absolute best & that’s exactly what I’m trying to do every single week. ‘I’m learning, I’m making mistakes, I’m pushing myself and I’m growing along the way!! Some weeks will be better than others, and that’s okay. I’m only human.’I’m not sharing this for sympathy or to make excuses, but simply to share a little of the reality behind the scenes! ‘Sometimes all you can do is show up, give everything you have and be proud of yourself for trying!!’A special thank you to my incredible partner @markballas who has been my biggest support throughout this journey. ‘His patience, encouragement and belief in me, especially during such a difficult week, mean more than he knows. I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better person to share this experience with??’To everyone who continues to support me, encourage me and cheer me on, please know how much it means. I’m only human’ Maura reflected on her challenging week in Dancing With The Stars training’You genuinely give me the strength to keep going, especially on the harder days. Your kindness never goes unnoticed.’I’m so grateful to still be here, to be learning and to have this opportunity. I’m proud that I kept going, even when things felt impossible, and I promise I’ll keep giving it everything I’ve got!! ‘I really do love everything about this show (apart from the Jive hehe) @dancingwiththestars. Here’s to coming back stronger.’Maura performed her jive dressed as Tinker Bell to You Can Fly! from Disney’s Peter Pan with her dance partner Mark Ballas.Their performance was critiqued by the judges who said while the dance felt ‘magical’ and complimented her ability to ‘sell’ it, she lacked some technical ability. Bruno Tonioli said she needed more elasticity through her legs, while Derek Hough claimed they needed ‘more snap and sharper flicks’.Carrie Ann Inaba said she felt Maura’s energy dipped in places, while guest judge Cynthia Erivo shared concerns that she looked ‘worried’ in parts.Reflecting on their comments and her performances afterwards, Maura said: ‘I love everything about this show apart from the jive. I do not like it at all.’Host Julianne Hough asked: ‘Were you giving those Tinker Bell tantrums to Mark this week?’ ‘I was in Tinker Hell this week,’ Maura replied. The reaction has been mixed, with plenty of praise for her entertainment value but some criticism of the actual technique. Some viewers felt Maura was being marked harshly compared with other contestants, while others agreed with the judges that her technique and energy needed improvement. Her Disney Night score put her and Mark on 68 points overall, leaving them at the bottom of the combined leaderboard after the two dances. However, they survived the elimination, while Julia and Ezra Sosa went home.Sharing her thoughts after their exit, Maura said: ‘[It’s] awful, just awful. It really was a shock. I also think, I’m no dancer, I’m no professional. I thought that was her best dance. She put her all into it, she was injured as well to come out and do a performance like that. It’s sad. We all get so close on this show as well.’Julia’s exit came after she sustained a rib injury earlier in the season and she broke down in tears in rehearsals after her rib started ‘acting up again’.And though later on the dance floor her paso doble earned her a score of 33 out of 40, it wasn’t enough to keep her on the show. After learning that she was eliminated, Julia said that being on the dance competition was ‘an incredible experience’, adding, ‘I pulled things out of myself that I didn’t realize were there.’ Dancing With The Stars airs live on ABC and Disney+ on Tuesdays and streams the next day on Hulu.
