Gary Wilmot to divorce at 72: Actor and theatre star announces split from third wife saying ‘people change’

Veteran actor and musical theatre star Gary Wilmot is the latest to fall foul of the ‘grey divorce’ trend after revealing that he and his wife of 23 years have separated. The former TV host, who found fame presenting children’s shows such as You and Me in the 1970s and 80s, has split from third wife Sara at the age of 72 after admitting that ‘people change’.The star, currently appearing in the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC)’s production of As You Like It in Stratford-Upon-Avon, told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I’m getting a divorce – at 72. When I was a child, 60 was very old, but now it seems you can go on forever. People live longer, your life goes through more phases, there seems to be more of us older ones getting divorces.’Gary met Sara, a video producer and former actress, when they appeared together in a production of Pirates of Penzance in 2000. They married three years later.Gary has spent a large part of his career in musical theatre, appearing as Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium and Billy Flynn in a touring production of Chicago, and he and Sara were regularly photographed together at West End parties. But Gary said: ‘As I’ve got older I don’t do much of that any more. The thing is, people change. She understands that too. I’m in a different phase of life, I feel 50.’I live in a flat and very happy living on my own.’ Gary Wilmot has split from third wife Sara at the age of 72 after admitting that ‘people change’ (pictured in 2018) Gary Wilmot in theatre production As You Like It at the Royal Shakespeare TheatreHe added: ‘No one else is involved. These things are never smooth but it’s the right thing for both of us.’There has been a rising tide of couples getting divorced later in life, a phenomenon known as ‘grey divorce’.Figures from the Office for National Statistics suggest the number of over-65s separating has increased by 38 per cent in ten years, while overall the number of divorces in the UK has declined. It has partly been attributed to longer lifespans and the fact that people are living healthier lives well into old age.Gary has been married three times. He has two daughters from his first marriage to Carol – Katie, 42, an architect, and set designer Georgia, 39.He spent the summer playing Gus in a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and has recently appeared on TV dramas Midsomer Murders and Death in Paradise. He will play the dual roles of warring brothers Duke Senior and Duke Frederick in the RSC’s As You Like It. It also stars US actor Jonathan Groff – known for Mindhunter, Frozen and Glee – as cross-dressing Rosalind in the all-male cast.Gary said he was still working on several different projects and had no plans to slow down.
