Former Sunrise host David ‘Kochie’ Koch has recalled the terrifying moment police warned him that a bikie gang member was repeatedly heading towards his family home. The veteran television presenter, 70, opened up about the ordeal during an interview on the Beretts’ Best podcast, hosted by sports broadcaster Mark Beretta, alongside ex Today show presenter Karl Stefanovic.Koch – who left Sunrise in 2023 – explained that the frightening situation began after he had somehow angered a member of a bikie gang in the course of his work presenting on Sunrise. ‘I ended up getting a bikie off-side. So, had the police come in after a show and say, “We keep intercepting this bikie coming towards your house,”‘ he recalled. Pictured with Karl Stefanovic The warning left Koch facing the uncomfortable prospect of having to reassure his family while knowing that a potentially dangerous man was repeatedly trying to reach their home.The police then delivered a grim assessment of the bikie’s prospects.’They said, “Don’t worry. He’s in a gang war, we don’t expect him to last 12 months.”‘Koch recalled how the threat eventually resolved itself, explaining: ‘We covered a news story, you know, of a shooting in Western Sydney, and I get a text from the police going, “He’s your man, you’re OK now.”‘The incident was particularly distressing because his daughter Georgie was still living at the family home at the time.’We still had Georgie living at the home, she was at uni, so. You know, sometimes I would leave for work at 3:30 and she’d be getting home… I’m thinking, “Oh God, we’ve got police patrols.”‘Stefanovic, who has also spent years in the spotlight, then revealed he had experienced his own frightening encounters with members of the public.’We had… maybe two or three death threats over the years. There were bona fide certifiable cops around, all logged…’ he said. During his chat with Beretta, Stefanovic was asked by Koch whether he would ‘do anything differently’ when it came to interviewing Robinson. Stefanovic said it was a ‘question he had thought about’ and had pondered the backlash.’Could I have done things differently… Should I have done this at that point in time?’ he said, listing the doubts he had after the interview.’If I have the chance again, I’m not sure. If I did it again, how would it be different?’ he continued, again listing considerations he has made since the episode. Stefanovic said that there was one thing he was sure of – he would have Robinson back on his show, even if he may handle the appearance differently next time. ‘I would definitely do him, because I think the calls that he’s made on these terrible rape gangs over there, I think it’s a worthy discussion point,’ Stefanovic said. ‘[The police] said, “We’ve been doing patrols past your house all last week, but because he’s persistent…’ so breaking that to [my wife] Lib was difficult.’ (David pictured with wife Libby) Stefanovic, who has also spent years in the spotlight, then revealed he had experienced his own frightening encounters with members of the public’Also, his positioning over there with the right, and with people who don’t have a voice in the UK that he represents. He can get 500,000 to one million people into the street now with one phone call. ‘I think that deserves more explanation in so far as what is he gonna tell those people to do in the next election? How is he gonna influence the cycle?’Koch challenged Stefanovic, insisting that Robinson ‘makes stuff up’. ‘We can debate that on my podcast… everyone can have their opinion about it and that’s great, that’s why I do it,’ Stefanovic said. ‘I’ll take some of the criticism on board. I’ll adapt and adopt it and move forward, but I will keep doing it because I love it, and I do think there’s a huge audience out there for it,’ he said.
