Eminem, 53, celebrates 18 years of sobriety as he shows off Narcotics Anonymous chip – after 2007 near-death methadone overdose drove him to seek help

Eminem proudly announced that he has been sober for 18 years on Monday.

The rapper, 53, shared an Instagram photo of himself holding a sobriety chip from Alcoholics Anonymous with the caption ‘XVIII’.

The Detroit native, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, received a wave of love from his fanbase, including a heartfelt comment from his younger half-brother Nathan Mathers, who wrote, ‘proud of you big bro.’

Fans flooded the comments section, with users writing: ‘Inspiring… Congratulations on this milestone… So happy for you and the man you are’.

In 2008, Eminem – whose adopted daughter recently welcomed her first child – sought help for his addiction to substances such as Vicodin, Ambien and Valium.

This change came after a methadone overdose incident a year prior.

In an interview with Vibe in May 2009, the Grammy-winning rapper detailed his addiction, estimating he consumed ‘anywhere between 10 to 20’ Vicodin daily in addition to massive doses of Valium, Ambien and other substances.

‘The numbers got so high,’ he said, ‘I don’t even know what I was taking.’

Regarding the overdose incident, he revealed that an ‘acquaintance’ provided him with medication, which he later discovered was methadone, a substance commonly used to help heroin addicts withdraw from the drug.

He confessed that his doctor informed him that the quantity of methadone he ingested was equivalent to injecting four bags of heroin.

‘Had I known it was methadone, I probably wouldn’t have taken it,’ he told the magazine. ‘But as bad as I was back then, I can’t even say 100 percent for sure… even when they told me I almost died, it didn’t click.’

In 2010, he dropped the album Recovery, which clinched the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album the subsequent year.

He spoke in more detail about his substance abuse disorder in 2015.

‘In 2007, I overdosed on pills, and I went into the hospital,’ he told Men’s Journal.

‘I was close to 230 pounds. I’m not sure how I got so big, but I have ideas.

‘The coating on the Vicodin and the Valium I’d been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach, so to avoid a stomachache, I was constantly eating — and eating badly.’

‘When I got out of rehab, I needed to lose weight, but I also needed to figure out a way to function sober,’ he added.

‘Unless I was blitzed out of my mind, I had trouble sleeping. So I started running. It gave me a natural endorphin high, but it also helped me sleep, so it was perfect.

‘It’s easy to understand how people replace addiction with exercise. One addiction for another but one that’s good for them.’

Eminem’s latest milestone came days after his adopted daughter Alaina Scott officially became a mother, welcoming her first child on Tuesday with husband Matt Moeller.

The 32-year-old new mom took to Instagram to share the first glimpses of her daughter, dressed in a custom-knit onesie that proudly displayed her unique name.

‘My heart outside my body. she’s everything and more. Scottie Marie Moeller born 4/14/26. Welcome to the world my sweet darling,’ Scott wrote in the emotional caption.

‘Scottie, in honor of my ‘scott sisters.’ The women who have given the name and my life so much meaning,” she continued, giving a heartfelt explanation for the name choice.

She added, ‘May she now give it a meaning of her own and always know how loved she is, by mom + dad, and her aunties.’

And in a loving tribute to her husband, Scott concluded, ‘To my husband, I can’t believe she’s ours. Thank you for giving me the greatest gift of my life. I love you endlessly.’

Eminem shares three daughters – two of whom he adopted – with his ex-wife Kim Scott, 51 – Alaina Marie, Hailie Jade, 30, and Stevie Laine, 23.

Alaina was born to Kim’s twin sister Dawn, and Eminem legally adopted her in the early 2000s after her biological mother reportedly struggled with drug use. Dawn passed away in January 2016 from an apparent drug overdose.

Eminem also adopted daughter Stevie, born in 2002 to Kim and her then-partner Eric Hartter. He officially adopted her in 2005, shortly after reuniting with Kim.

After a famously turbulent history, the high school sweethearts last reunited for a three-month remarriage in early 2006 before finalizing their split in December of that same year.
