Clive Davis funeral: Emotional stars unite to bid final farewell to music mogul after his death aged 94

Stars of the music world united on Monday to bid a poignant final farewell to music legend Clive Davis.   Davis died Monday, June 22 at the age of 94 after a glittering decades-long run in the industry, during which he signed artists ranging from Janis Joplin to Bruce Springsteen and shepherded Whitney Houston and Barry Manilow to fame.Celebrities including Dionne Warwick, Barry Manilow, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, Adrien Brody, Gayle King,  along with former house speaker Nancy Pelosi were among the mourners at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan.Davis is survived by four children – Fred, Lauren, Mitchell, and Doug – and eight grandchildren in addition to longtime partner Greg Schriefer.The music executive – who famously came out as bisexual in 2013 – had been in a relationship with real estate agent Schriefer for over two decades.Davis’s family released a statement to Daily Mail which read: ‘To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives.  Stars of the music world united on Monday to bid a poignant final farewell to music legend Clive Davis  – seen October 2023  Barry Manilow was among the mourners at the service’He discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations.’To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the center of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love. No matter how extraordinary his professional accomplishments, he never lost sight of what mattered most: the people he loved.’The family concluded their statement by making sure that he was not just remembered for his career in music, but also as a beloved figure in his personal life.They wrote: ‘Through every chapter of his remarkable life, family remained Clive’s greatest pride and deepest joy. Today, we celebrate not only a towering figure whose influence changed music forever, but the man who led our family with grace, generosity, and kindness. ‘We will miss him greatly, cherish him always, and carry his love with us for the rest of our lives.Just last month, he was hospitalized in his home state for an upper respiratory infection and was discharged days later.Davis was a titan of the music industry as he also helped shape the careers of Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, among many others.He was the former president of Columbia Records and was the chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment.  Adrien Brody and Georgina Chapman arrive at the funeral service Gayle King arrived at synagogue to pay her respects Dionne Warwick was in attendance at the service  The music icon was among those remembering the late Davis Stevie Wonder joined a long line of stars at the event  Wonder was among the many musicians arriving to the synagogue  Former house speaker Nancy Pelosi was among the mourners at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan Jennifer Hudson was in attendance Davis’ casket was carried out by pallbearers  Clive’s casket was carried out of the synagogue by pallbearers  His last public appearance was in the Big Apple as he was in attendance at The Gordon Parks Foundation Awards Dinner and Auction 2026 on May 19.It was there where he was seated next to one of his protégés Keys, 45, at the charity gala.In 2013, he revealed for the first time that he was bisexual in his autobiography The Soundtrack Of My Live.As he had been married to women twice before, his two more recent partners were male.He wrote in his book: ‘I enjoyed my time with all of them and honestly felt I had no strong sexual preference.’Clive separated from his second wife in 1985 after a period of ‘soul searching and self-analysis’ and says that he went on to have simultaneous relationships with two women and a man. He later graduated from Harvard Law School in 1956.And then in 60s, he became General Counsel of Columbia Records before being appointed as Vice President and General Manager in 1966.The following year, Davis reached a major milestone when he became President of Columbia Records, where he pursued his interest in rock and folk music.He attended the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and signed Janis Joplin’s band called Big Brother and The Holding Company.Other artists that he eventually signed included Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Santana, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith as well as Earth, Wind and Fire.Davis was notably inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2000 as a non-performer. Every artist that I’ve signed since has had an impact.’Davis also helped in the successful careers of Simon & Garfunkel, Andy Williams and Barbra Streisand.He had also hired recording artist Tony Orlando who later became vice-president of Columbia/CBS Music. In 1969, Orlando notably signed Barry Manilow.Davis left Columbia and went on to launch Arista Records in 1974.The label, which is now owned by Sony Music Entertainment, helped kickstart the careers of other music artists such as Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Aretha Franklin, The Grateful Dead, Eurythmics, and Dionne Warwick. Secondly, I like feeling informed, so that when I meet the new artists or we spend time together, they’re not talking to yesterday’s maven, so to speak.’
