Billy Joel shared a health update after undergoing surgery for a rare brain condition. The 77-year-old singer-songwriter reassured his fans and said he is now doing ‘fine’ during a call-in on his SiriusXM show, The Billy Joel Channel, this week. Last month, the music legend revealed he underwent a procedure to relieve some of the symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus, a disorder that affects his hearing, vision and balance.’I know people are worried about me because they read that I have a brain disorder, which sounds a lot worse than it actually is,’ he told his listeners on Tuesday. ‘I’m okay,’ he said, before adding that his ‘balance isn’t that good.’ The New York State of Mind crooner further revealed that he had also ‘lost a little bit of my hearing’ but claimed that may have less to do with the brain disorder and more to do with his age and ‘the loud volume’ of music from decades of touring. I’m okay, and I appreciate your call,’ he stated. Back in May 2025, Joel revealed he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. The disorder causes the brain’s ventricles to enlarge from buildup of cerebrospinal fluid and can affect walking, memory and bladder control, according to the Mayo Clinic. At the time, he canceled his concerts and said his doctors advised him not to perform until he recovered. He underwent brain shunt surgery, with doctors saying it could help mitigate some of his symptoms. The procedure, which takes around two hours, drains excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain’s ventricles to another part of the body, usually the abdomen. Joel cancelled concerts after his diagnosis, and it doesn’t appear that he’ll get back to touring in the near future. The music icon says his symptoms have drastically improved since undergoing surgery. I’m doing whatever it is they tell me to do,’ he declared. Last month, Joel said his symptoms had drastically improved following the brain surgery. ‘[Beforehand] I had this sense of being on a boat, like this rocking motion,’ he said. ‘I wasn’t steady on my feet.’ Joel isn’t ready to return to the stage, with doctors telling him to take it easy following the diagnosis and surgery.
