Ben Affleck, 54, revealed that he had been robbed at knifepoint as a teen, by an attacker who later went on to kill a person ‘It’s that thing where you’re like, “Okay, I’m either gonna run” – but of course, the worst thing you could do is run,’ which he described as the ‘totally sensible thing to do’ in a situation as such.’Instead, I’m like, “I’m not gonna run, I’m not afraid of ’em,”‘ Affleck said, at which point the attackers brandished a weapon as they sought to rob him.He said: ‘Immediately, they pass me, grab me, take a knife out: “Gimme your money.” And I was like, “Oh!” I was scared.’Affleck said that the attackers noticed that he recognized them, changing the dynamics of the situation.’Out of the corner of my eye, I realized who they were; I recognized them from playing baseball,’ he said. ‘They were older boys that I knew – and they were like, “Oh, yeah, what’s up?”‘Affleck said he told the attackers: ‘I guess I’m off the hook,’ and they did not assault him any further. The criminal behavior continued for one of the attackers, Affleck said, who wound up imprisoned over a killing years after their initial confrontation.’That kid who robbed me ended up three or four years later killing somebody with a knife and going to prison for 20 years,’ Affleck said. ‘So there was that, you know what I mean? And you were kind of aware of it.’ The Argo actor pictured at the Venice International Film Festival on September 8 The Gone Girl star said he did not tell his mother Chris Affleck, who passed away this past June at 83, about the violent encounter at the time when it occurred.’I would never tell my mother anything bad that happened,’ Affleck said. ‘I remember I told that story about the aborted mugging. She was like, “Why didn’t you tell me?”‘And I couldn’t, for the life of me, think why – but I just never would’ve – I didn’t wanna worry her. I didn’t wanna scare her.’Affleck, who is father to three children, Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 14, said that he goes out of his way to let his children know he’s receptive to hear what they have to say, knowing how he kept things to himself growing up.’I’m always like, “You guys know you can tell me anything – anything! I’m so cool with anything you have to say,”‘ he said. ‘And they’re kind of like, “Oh my God, will this stop?”‘Affleck said that the area he grew up in had been rife with violence in the timeframe during the 1980s.’The high school that I went to, I started at that high school in 1986,’ Affleck said. ‘In 1981, a kid had been killed there in a race fight. It was very much a lot of working class and poor people feeling like they were fighting it out.’There was a very intense and real awareness of ethnicity and …various little tribes of one kind or another, but also, that you were with everybody. And friendship kind of superseded that.’Affleck and Washington share the screen in the upcoming film Animals, which is slated to come out October 9 in theaters and on Netflix.
