Barry Manilow is taking a ‘break’ from touring after cancelling a number of dates this month.The singer, 83, underwent surgery for lung cancer late last year and this month has been forced to scrap two of his Las Vegas residency dates owing to ‘technical and vocal problems’. Taking to his social media accounts on Tuesday, Manilow admitted his recent UK arena tour and performing 29 shows in 68 days have taken their toll and he is now taking a break from his The Hits Come Home! Vegas residency. ‘Hi everybody – Barry here. And I want you to be the first to know that we’re going to have to take a quick break,’ he began the statement.’We just finished a fantastic summer tour. 29 shows in 68 days. The shows were fantastic. The audiences were fantastic. And I sounded fantastic. But it seems that we were pushing a little too hard.”Now we all need to sit down and shut up. Last week Manilow cancelled his Vegas concert just hours before he was due on stage.Earlier in August, the singer also pulled out of a scheduled concert in Lexington, Kentucky, at the last moment The postponed shows in Las Vegas are set to be rescheduled next week. Manilow was diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer last November, after a trip to the doctor to address pain in his hip.He received the diagnosis after twice battling bronchitis, undergoing an MRI on his lungs and pelvis.’If he hadn’t done that, man … he saved my life, because there’s no symptoms for what I had,’ Manilow told People this past March. ‘I could go on, nothing hurt – but they found the dot in my lung. F*** you. I can’t have cancer.’He added of the cancer, ‘They don’t even know how long I had this thing sitting on me. It could have been years.’If it had gone any further, then I would be up s***’s creek. It just so happened that it hadn’t spread, and boy oh boy, I thought I might be dying.’The singer said the events made him introspective about life, noting that ‘you just don’t even think about’ how fragile it can be until moments as such.He continued: ‘And suddenly, you have lung cancer. But I’m still here. I’m not all here; there’s part of me that isn’t here – they took out a part of me, and now I’ve got to figure out, ‘What do I do?”Barry, who hailed his husband and manager Garry Kief for helping him stay upbeat amid the troubled time, said that the health crisis had made him ‘take stock’ of his life.’This made me stop and think about: Have I done what I wanted to do, and have I made people happy?’ he told the publication. ‘Have I been a good friend? It really did stop me in my tracks.’He added, ‘And the answers are yes. But I’m not so sure.’
