A landslide unleashed a torrent of mud and water across Nepal on Wednesday, killing at least 157 people and leaving more than 400 tourists missing near the border with China. The number of people missing in the mudslide disaster in Tibet’s Gyirong county has risen to 558, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday.Among those, 260 were foreign nationals, CCTV said. The death toll remained at three, it said.

Nepal said 468 tourists and travellers, including 393 foreigners, remained out of contact on Thursday, 24 hours after a deadly flood tore through the border region with Tibet.”About 468 tourists and travellers are out of contact, among them 75 are Nepalis,” Suraj Ghimire, a Department of Tourism spokesman, told AFP. At least 165 people have been confirmed killed in both Nepal and China, where a further 558 people are reported missing.

The US government on Wednesday extended its condolences over the deadly floods in Nepal and pledged $500,000 in emergency assistance, the State Department said.”The United States extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the devastating flash floods in the Rasuwa district of Nepal,” the agency said, adding that Washington was deploying a disaster response adviser to the region while pledging $500,000 to support rescue efforts.

A huge wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river on the Himalayan border of Nepal and China’s Tibet on Wednesday, triggering catastrophic flooding on the Nepali side that killed scores of people and left hundreds of tourists missing.Initial reports from Nepali officials suggested an earthquake in the area could have caused the lower part of a glacier to collapse and trigger the floods.As darkness fell, authorities continued the grim task of recovering and trying to identify bodies. Some 157 bodies had been recovered so far, Nepal police said late on Wednesday.Officials at Nepal’s tourism ministry told media outlets that over 400 tourists are missing, of whom around 340 are foreigners.
