Help me.’In the wake of the backlash, Stewart claimed that Melvin spilling chocolate on her planned outfit late last week left her with only 10 minutes to change costumes. Stewart, who is worth an estimated $400 million, had appeared with Melvin on TV late last week when the anchor accidentally squirted chocolate ganache on her white pants. The soiled slacks were purportedly part of her original costume, so she had to switch up the look. At the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando on Tuesday, Stewart said: ‘I looked at myself. I said, “You really look hungry and homeless.” So I wrote a sign that said, “I’m hungry,” and boy, did that go off.”‘On Friday’s segment of Today, Melvin appeared unimpressed by Stewart’s excuse and asked her point-blank: ‘Why was I dragged into it?’ Martha Stewart was confronted by Craig Melvin on the Today show as to why she blamed him for her disastrous ‘homeless’ Halloween costume The lifestyle guru, 85, claimed earlier this week that Melvin accidentally spilling chocolate on her planned outfit left her with only 10 minutes to switch the look’I was making a joke,’ she told him. ‘I was giving a talk that you had spilled chocolate on me and I couldn’t wear that costume that I planned to wear Halloween night to this party.”And that became part of the story. But I did apologize for spilling the chocolate and we moved on,’ Melvin reminded her.’I move on now,’ she said.’There was no connection between that and the costume later,’ he went on, and she agreed, ‘Oh, no, no. It wasn’t your fault.’‘It was Saturday and it was Halloween and I was invited to a party,’ the multimillionaire explained. ‘I was very busy all day, doing a lot of gardening, replanting lots of trees up at the farm. I really hadn’t planned a Halloween costume this year. Usually I’m a very elaborate Halloween costumer. I’ve had the most beautiful costumes over the years.’I didn’t have a costume because you had spilled some chocolate on my white sweater and I don’t blame you at all.’In footage from the pre-Halloween cooking segment, the spilled chocolate was  visible on Stewart’s $3,000 designer white pants and shoes, with just a trace of a stain on her sweater. ‘It was a joke that I said I blamed you. It was stupid. And then tone deaf or whatever I was, according to my grandson. I said, “What do you think?” And he said, “Tone deaf.” It was just stupid. And I apologized.’Stewart clarified that she wasn’t ‘making fun of anybody or making light of the great problems that face our country.’She went on to say she hopes the ‘new administration’ takes big steps to help the hungry and ensure that ‘everyone else is taken care of better.’When Melvin asked what lessons she has learned, Stewart responded that she’ll ‘pay closer attention to social issues,’ insisting she cares ‘about all the problems facing us.’I made a mistake. I was stupid, what else can I say? I’m so sorry,’ she said, adding: ‘I hope that my followers and my fans and the rest of America forgives me for doing something that was not meant in any way to be a bad thing.’Stewart addressed the controversial Halloween image in a statement obtained by The Daily Mail, insisting she didn’t intend on offending anyone but rather had hoped to ‘bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness’ with her costume. While Stewart said she was ‘distressed’ knowing the pain her costume had caused others, she never actually apologized.’I’ve spent decades teaching others how to celebrate Halloween — sharing fun, festive recipes, providing unique craft ideas, and giving tips on entertaining and hosting to make the most of one of my favorite holidays of the year,’ she said in the statement. ‘I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.
