The Ashes LIVE: Surprising star gets Travis Head out after England make one of the biggest mistakes of the series

Strange choice by England

Why have they pulled Bethell out of the attack and replaced him with Jacks?

Bethell was sending down some good balls and pinning down the batters, especially Khawaja, who is on five from 27 deliveries right now.

Slow start for Khawaja, Australia trail by 73 runs

Khawaja moves to three from 19 balls as England put the clamps on the run rate.

Nice little segment of play here from the tourists, with Bethell and Stokes working very well in tandem and sending down plenty of dot balls.

Bethell sends a message to the Aussie selectors

He’s been very effective out there, finding a bit of turn and providing a great change-up while paired with Stokes.

Australia’s decision to go without a specialist spinner at the SCG for the first time in almost 140 years is already controversial, but should they struggle to get English scalps in the second innings, the criticism will become even more intense.

Problems for Steve Smith, Australia 4-306

Steve Smith has hit Stokes for another quality boundary but it’s hard to feel confident about his innings.

Plenty of mis-hits for the stand-in skipper, with a few nicks thrown in. He just glanced at one and couldn’t hide his frustration.

He isn’t finding the middle of the bat that often and frequently looks sketchy out there.

Australia reach 4-301, trail by 83 runs in after 70 overs

Usman is off the mark with two, Smith is sitting on 32 from 54 balls.

Classy move from Head after a classy knock

Lawrence Booth writes…

Travis Head walks off to a standing ovation here at the SCG, and he turns before he steps over the boundary to acknowledge it. Quite right too: his 600 runs at 66 have been one of the main differences between the teams.

Thick edge to Smith frustrates Stokes

Steve Smith hits an awful boundary. A thick edge to Stokes just flew to third man and the skipper throws his head back in exasperation.

Two balls later the English put up a big shout for LBW. It looked like there was an inside edge but in any case, the tourists have no more reviews left.

Huge cheer for Usman Khawaja

His wife and daughters are applauding from the stands as the cheers ring out around the ground for the veteran in his last Test.

He’s a great player of spin and gets through that wicket maiden from Bethell.

WICKET! Bethell gets Head LBW for 163

Bethell gets Head given out LBW by the field umpire but the Aussie signals for a review straight away.

You’d think only a bit of bat could save him here.

Nothing from Snicko until the ball strikes his pad.

It’s in line and the right height – and Head is gone!

He’ll be very disappointed to get out to a part-time spinner. That was Bethell’s fourth Test wicket.

Head reaches 600 runs for the series, Australia trail by 96 runs

Stokes opens with a loosener that flies so far to leg side that it could’ve been called a wide.

His next is almost a yorker that gets dug out by Head.

Another full ball from the skipper, that didn’t even hit the pitch before it reached the toe of Head’s bat.

A single takes the opener to 600 runs for the series. He’s now just 12 runs off equalling his highest Test score of 175.

Jacob Bethell into the attack, Australia 3-287

He’s bowling left-arm offies to Smith, who hits the second delivery through cover for four with ease. Immaculate timing there.

If England had a bat pad in, Smith might’ve been in deep trouble with his next shot, which popped up.

He tries to hit Bethell out of the ground straight down the field with the following ball, but doesn’t get hold of it fully, and it falls safely but doesn’t reach the rope.

Lunch: Australia 3-280 after 65 overs

Terrific session for Australia, with head on 162 from 160 balls and Smith on 15 from 38 deliveries.

England, on the other hand, have endured a nightmare thanks to Jacks’ mind-bendingly bad drop, the failure of their last review and more wayward bowling – especially from Potts, who has been thoroughly abused out there.
