The Ashes LIVE: England star gets blasted for unbelievably bad shot: ‘Worst dismissal in Ashes history’

WICKET! Carse departs for 1, England 8-382

Cameron Green finally gets one, getting an edge out of Carse that flies to Alex Carey.

And the first thing the all-rounder does is look back at the umpire to see if it’s a no-ball after his huge let-down with Jamie Smith.

Root will have to bat like a madman to get that double ton now, you’d expect.

WICKET! Jacks goes for 27, bowled Neser, caught Green

Talk about the kiss of death.

No sooner did I say England had got the upper hand than Jacks is dismissed by a great ball that moved away from him as he tried to steer it to leg. That flew to Cameron Green at gully and a great partnership is over.

Root is on 156… can he get to the double ton with three wickets in hand?

Big job done for England

Michael Neser is into the attack, meaning the Lions have seen off Australia’s new-ball pairing of Starc and Boland without losing a wicket. Impressive stuff considering the quality of the bowling they were up against.

After those early setbacks, England have regained the upper hand for the second day in a row.

Drinks: England 6-374

Cameron Green is back into the rotation. He only gave away a single in that over, and drew a bit of a shout by drawing a play and miss out of Will Jacks, who has frequently looked shaky on his way to 27 from 71 balls.

No luck for unplayable Boland, England 6-373

Watching Boland send it down to Will Jacks is an absolute pleasure for any Aussie fan.

If there’s any justice in the world, an outside edge will be forthcoming soon – he’s beating the bat that regularly.

150 to Joe Root!

Simply outstanding stuff from Root, who hits the mark from 226 balls, with 15 boundaries.

The way he’s going, you’d have to back him to get to 200 today if he doesn’t run out of partners.

Here’s Lawrence Booth’s take…

That’s Joe Root’s 17th Test score of 150+. Only four have made more: Tendulkar (20), Lara and Sangakkara (19), Bradman (18).

Has Mitchell Starc found the fountain of youth?

It’s just been pointed out that he’s clocking an average speed of 142 in this Test after bowling for 23 overs. At the age of 35. And after being the Aussies’ spearhead in every Test.

More top-shelf stuff from Boland, England 6-367

Boland keeps producing masterful deliveries. He just beat the edge of Jacks’ bat with an absolute ripper that moved away just a hair too much to find the bat.

Joe Root is on 148 now.

Beautiful over from Boland, England 6-363

The Victorian gave both batsmen fits in that over, but especially Jacks. He hit the part-time spinner right where it hurts with one that nipped back a fair way, then put up a huge shout for LBW with another one that seamed back. It was a bit too high, but Boland has the ball on a string at the moment.

Jamie Smith is blasted for the ‘worst dismissal in Ashes history’

You can almost feel the anger and bewilderment through the screen when you search for Smith’s name on X after his truly awful stroke to get out just before lunch.

Root on the verge of 150, England 6-357

The quality keeps coming from Starc, who comes close to getting an edge out of Jacks with a wicked ball outside off stump.

Then he goes a fraction too short and down leg, and Jacks clips it off his hip for four.

Joe Root is on 144 from 210 balls.

Starc takes the new ball, England 6-351 after the 81st over

He begins with three nice dot balls to Joe Root, who tries to drive him with the fourth delivery but can’t pierce the field.

A lovely near-yorker follows, landing about a foot short of the crease and swinging into the batter.

Root gets a tiny bit of width to off with the final ball and dinks it away to the boundary at third man.
