Officials in Maryland announced Monday afternoon that a shooting occurred inside a high school, with one student confirmed to have been shot.

The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) said the incident unfolded at Thomas S. Wootton High School, a top-performing school in one of the wealthiest counties in the country.

Police identified the suspect as a student, who was arrested near campus shortly after the shooting.

“MCPD dispatched at 2:15 p.m., for the preliminary report of shots fired near Thomas S. Wootton High School,” MCPD said.

Authorities also noted that all roads leading to the school were closed.

Parents were advised to go to a nearby campus at Robert Frost Middle School, located at 9201 Scott Drive, which has been designated as the meeting location.

Students who ride the bus will be released directly from the school once the scene is deemed safe, while parents picking up their children are advised to wait for further instructions.
