UMass in Frozen Four: Matt Murray seizes his moment, leads Minutemen into championship game

Speaking to the media via Zoom at the Frozen Four Wednesday, Matt Murray kept saying he wanted to physically contribute to a UMass victory.

The senior goalie didn’t want to discount whatever intangible contributions he’d made as a leader, as a good teammate and a strong presence in practice.

But Filip Lindberg, whose 2020-21 season is the best in program history, had passed Murray on the depth chart.

But Lindberg went into COVID-19 contact tracing protocol prior to the semifinals, Murray was assured of getting to play at least one more college game.

If Lindberg goes back into the net Saturday and there’s a good chance that’s what happens, Murray’s career NCAA Tournament record will be a perfect 1-0 with a win over the only team that’s beaten the Minutemen in the postseason during the program’s budding golden age.

It’s a tough situation when you haven’t played in three months, I think it’s been about that long since he started a game,” Carvel said. "
