The Boston Red Sox are close to acquiring catcher Ronaldo Hernández and another prospect from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitchers Chris Mazza and Jeffrey Springs, Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported Wednesday morning.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that infielder Nick Sogard is the other prospect.
He had a strong season in 2018 for Low-A Bowling Green in 2018, slashing .284/.339/.494/.832 with 21 home runs, 20 doubles, one triple and 79 RBIs in 109 games (449 plate appearances).
He didn’t perform as well at High-A Charlotte in 2019, posting a .265/.299/.397/.696 line, nine homers, 19 doubles, three triples and 60 RBIs in 103 games (425 plate appearances).
Boston designated Springs for assignment on Tuesday after officially signing and adding Japanese reliever Hirokazu Sawamura to the 40-man roster.
Boston designated Mazza for assignment Feb. 12 to make room on the 40-man roster for Martin Perez.
