Since that loss — and another setback to Northern Illinois that quickly followed — the Zips (8-3, 6-2) turned it around and have taken down Toledo and Bowling Green, who both were MAC leaders when the teams played.
UA now trails only Toledo in the MAC standings, and the current upswing has gone a long way toward giving Zips coach John Groce a look at what he’s got on the court.
“We feel blessed that we’ve had a pretty good string here of being able to play games and being able to practice," he said.
After Tuesday, the Zips will have played 12 games this season and almost half of them will have come in that key stretch.
A certain bit of wear showed in the first half Saturday against Western Michigan before the Zips pulled away to win by double digits (79-68).
With so little time between games, Groce has had to adjust schedules and shorten film sessions, keeping them concise to maintain focus.
