Hochman: Is Alabama's DeVonta Smith the best player on college football's best offense ever? A case can be made

Sure, a few other receivers have won the Heisman Trophy — the most-recent recipient, before Smith this season, was Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991.

And Monday, he’ll cap his college career in yet another title game, this time as the reigning Heisman winner.

“He’s grateful (for the Heisman) and he’s a great player,” Alabama offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood told reporters of Smith.

For some voters and Heisman influencers, Smith’s season will set a bar, and if another receiver reaches it for an undefeated team, maybe he’ll get the hardware.

Monday night versus Ohio State, Smith will play one last time for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

A dynamic, selfless, likable ballclub that finished two spots out of the rankings this week earned a boost with Thursday’s win.
