Jürgen Klopp's team selection will show Champions League intentions, as Liverpool juggle priorities

Tonight’s trip to Atalanta poses arguably the toughest test that Jürgen Klopp and his players will have faced in the Champions League this season.

The Serie A club have scored 23 goals across eight games in all competitions this season, and will certainly pose a significant threat to Liverpool’s defence.

But with tough games in the Premier League also emerging every week, combined with the series of injuries that have occurred already, Klopp hasn’t had the luxury of starting his first-choice eleven for every match.

After the mid-season interval, Liverpool have 12 matches over the course of the festive period, which will provide a stern test of the squad at Klopp’s disposal, not just in a quality sense but mostly of their fitness.

If he goes with a strong line-up, it shows that securing qualification early is a priority, but if there are major changes then it could be a sign of looking ahead to future matches rather than the one that’s in front of him.
