Mark McKenzie salvages draw in DC, earns Union playoff berth

Anthony Fontana’s opener was equalized by two goals by the hosts in four minutes, Donovan Pines scoring off a corner and Yamil Asad converting a penalty.

Fontana, getting the start with Jose Martinez on international duty and Warren Creavalle injured, had a quiet first half, struggling to find the game and the Union’s pressing rhythm.

Asad was clean on the take, sending Andre Blake the wrong way to put D.C. United (2-10-6, 12 points) in position to win just its third game of the year and end a seven-game losing streak to the Union.

Ninety-nine times out 100, players put that one 10 rows deep, but Mark had the composure to lock his ankle, keep his head down and strike through the ball and really score an important goal for us.”

He made an outstanding reflex save in the 42nd minute on Russell Canouse after a free kick was headed into a dangerous area in the box.

Three minutes later, after Santos hacked down Asad on the edge of the box, Blake securely handled Edison Flores’s free kick as Ola Kamara flashed across his face.
