Washington Nationals' lineup for 1st of 4 with the Atlanta Braves in DC

Davey Martinez is working with what he has this season, with the lineup banged up, some opt outs, and some injuries depleting his roster, and in recent weeks some power missing, so the third-year skipper has to try to put points on the board however he can.

“It’s amazing what happens when our starting pitching goes out there and gives us five-plus, six innings, things change.

Martinez’s club got solid starts from Max Scherzer ( 7.0 scoreless ) and Aníbal Sánchez ( 5+ IP, 3 ER ) in the series against the Rays and the club manufactured enough offense to beat the AL leaders in back-to-back games.

I’ve said this before, they don’t quit, they’re going to play hard every day, so we’ll see what happens, we’ve got a day off tomorrow, which is well-needed, and we’ll come back and do it again Thursday,” Martinez said.

“That’s a good sign,” Juan Soto said, after he returned to go 1 for 2 with two walks in the 2nd of 2 with the Rays on Tuesday.

After splitting their four-game series with the Atlanta Braves in Truist Park last weekend, it’s four more with their NL East rivals in D.C. starting tonight (weather permitting).
