Cleveland ace Shane Bieber faces Twins' Kenta Maeda as Luis Arraez goes on IL

Twins righthander Kenta Maeda leads major league baseball's starting pitchers in WHIP (walks + hits per innings pitched) at 0.72.

The teams are battling Chicago for first place in the American League Central; they are tied for second, a game behind the White Sox.

The Twins put second baseman Luis Arraez on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, because of left knee tendinitis and recalled pitcher Devin Smeltzer from the St. Paul site.

Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute.

In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

Top pitching prospects Jordan Balazovic and Matt Canterino were added to the St. Paul site as Ildemaro Vargas was lost to the Cubs via waivers.
