Astros put Chris Devenski, Blake Taylor on injured list

Relievers Chris Devenski and Blake Taylor were both placed on the injured list with elbow soreness, removing two of manager Dusty Baker’s high-leverage options prior to a critical five-game series against the division-leading Oakland A’s.

In his first big league season, the 25-year-old southpaw has ascended to one of Baker’s most trusted arms late in games.

In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, with the Astros clinging to a two-run lead, Taylor issued consecutive walks to Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani to start the seventh.

Taylor’s absence leaves Baker with closer Ryan Pressly and Enoli Paredes as his two most proven, trusted relievers.

Cionel Pérez and Brooks Raley are both lefthanded, so options still exist for Baker to play matchups.

“All Cionel has to do is throw consistent strikes, because he has the stuff,” said Baker, whose bullpen is walking 5.47 hitters per nine innings.
