Roberto Perez provides immediate impact on defense in return to Cleveland Indians lineup against Pittsburgh

In the third inning, Perez sprung from behind the plate to field a bunt attempt by Pirates infielder Kevin Newman.

That throw turned out to be critical as Dyson likely would have scored the game-winning run on Newman’s base hit later in the inning.

The throw impressed acting manager Sandy Alomar Jr., who said Perez was able to hang on to a foul tip by Adam Frazier while making the play.

Earlier in the inning, Indians reliever Nick Wittgren had allowed Dyson to reach second base when he fielded a bunt attempt by Stallings and tried to force the speedy outfielder at second instead of throwing to first for the easy out.

Once the Gold Glove Award winner began stretching things out to 120 feet, he figured he was ready to go.

Perez said it was difficult to watch games from home and not travel with the club because of COVID-19 protocols that limit the number of players on the road.
