Cavaliers get bubble invite as league approves voluntary workout plan

The NBA and NBA Players Association approved an offseason training plan Tuesday night for the eight teams that did not participate in the league’s restart and seeding games before the playoffs began.

Voluntary workouts can be held from Sept. 14-Oct. 6 at team facilities in a controlled, "campus" environment because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the second-worst record in the NBA, the Cavs feared they would go nearly nine months between games, a major setback in the development of their young team, and lobbied for some form of minicamp or scrimmages.

According to a league press release, the campus will include the team’s practice facilities and private living accommodations for all participating players and staff.

The first phase of the program for the eight teams will run from Sept. 14-20 with voluntary individual workouts and the start of daily COVID-19 testing.

Voluntary group training will run from Sept. 21-Oct. 6, with practices, skill or conditioning sessions and intra-squad scrimmages permitted and continued daily testing.
