Liverpool defender Joe Gomez 'beginning to rival' Virgil van Dijk

Joe Gomez is beginning challenging £70m man Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool's best defender when it comes to one and two-touch play, according to former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino.

Gomez suffered an injury interrupted season last year and had to prove him self worthy of a place in the first XI on his return by overhauling more experienced team-mates in Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

And Cascarino has been so impressed with Gomez that he compared him with the rock on which the Reds' seemingly unstoppable title charge has been built - Van Dijk.

"When he was sidelined through injury and then working his way back into the team, the likes of Joël Matip and Dejan Lovren got in front of him in the pecking order to partner Virgil van Dijk.

Gomez helped Liverpool keep yet another clean sheet at the weekend as Curtis Jones' goal knocked rivals Everton out of the FA Cup on Sunday.

And the England international insists that no one in Klopp's squad wants to "chill" despite a busy festive programme which also saw the Kop outfit travel to Qatar to win the Club World Cup.
