Minnesota Twins

Cleveland Indians beat first-place Minnesota Twins at their own game, 5-2

But the Indians tried their darnedest Tuesday night as they hit four homers to beat the steamrolling Twins, 5-2, to start a three-game series that is far more important for Terry Francona’s club than it is to Rocco Baldelli’s.

They hit the four homers against rookie left-hander Devin Smeltzer (0-1, 3.65), who was making his second big-league start after throwing six scoreless innings against Milwaukee on May 28.

Shane Bieber (5-2, 3.57), shaky in his last start against Boston, threw seven strong innings on a pleasant June night.

Gonzalez, the guy who hit .538 (7-for-13) against the Indians in last year’s ALDS, was the only Twin to reach base as he doubled with two out in the fourth.

RHP Carlos Carrasco (4-6, 4.98) will face the Twins and LHP Martin Perez (7-2, 3.71) in the middle game of this three-game series on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. SportsTime Ohio, WTAM and WMMS will carry the contest.
