Chicago Cubs

It's Yu Darvish vs. Jake Arrieta at Wrigley tonight — who will have the better start? Check the numbers.

“He’s a legend in Chicago, for sure,” Darvish, 32, said last week of Arrieta, 33, whom he replaced in the Cubs rotation in 2018.

Arrieta came to the Cubs in 2013, won the Cy Young Award in 2015 and helped the team win the World Series in 2016.

But coming into Monday’s game, the narrative is shifting slightly, although neither pitcher has been consistent or particularly effective this year.

Darvish’s ERA and WHIP with the Rangers over a similar stretch (2012-17; he missed the 2015 season after Tommy John elbow surgery).

His last appearance at Wrigley was in Game 4 of the 2017 National League Championship Series, in which he pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up three hits and one run in the Cubs’ 3-2 victory over the Dodgers.

Jake Arrieta, who signed with the Phillies in 2018, won some of the biggest games in modern Cubs history.
