Alex Ovechkin says he hopes Andrei Svechnikov is okay after knocking out Carolina rookie

April 16 at 12:03 AMIn his first fight since 2010, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin landed several hard blows to knock out Carolina Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov in the first period of Monday’s first-round playoff game.

Svechnikov challenged Ovechkin to the fight after the two exchanged slashes roughly 11 minutes into the game.

Carolina Hurricanes Coach Rod Brind’Amour implied after the game that Ovechkin shouldn’t have accepted the fight.

2 pick in the 2018 draft played in every game for the Hurricanes in the regular season, scoring 20 goals and adding 17 assists.

Said Washington goaltender Braden Holtby: “He’s a kid that takes a lot of cheap shots and that kind of thing.
