Harry Potter fans have long speculated about the status of the pair's relationship, especially since Rowling, 53, later confirmed that the Hogwarts headmaster was gay and in love with his former friend.

Speaking in the Distinctly Dumbledore feature on the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Blu-Ray about the characters portrayed by Jude Law and Johnny Depp in the films, Rowling said: 'Their relationship was incredibly intense.

Director David Yates also added his input, saying: 'This is a story about two men who loved each other, and ultimately have to fight each other.
