DC United opens season with win against league champion Atlanta

WASHINGTON - Troubled by neither the reigning champions nor the frightful weather, D.C. United on Sunday launched a season of great promise with a performance that, except for some slips and slides, was as intoxicating as last year's resurgence.

With a well-crafted goal as the first half ended and a goalkeeping gift early in the second, D.C. picked up where it left off last fall in defeating Atlanta United, 2-0, at a wet Audi Field.

He assisted Paul Arriola's opening goal and scored in the 58th minute when Brad Guzan misplayed his 25-yard shot, helping D.C. stretch its regular season unbeaten streak to 11 before an announced crowd of 16,942.

Eight days after a three-goal defeat to Montreal in the last tuneup, D.C. generated many chances and lacked only a finishing touch in remaining perfect at home in the four times D.C. has hosted Atlanta.

Newcomer Gonzalo Martinez, the 2018 South America player of the year, did not enter until the 61st minute, but for the most part, Atlanta was close to full strength.

Guzan did not need to move much to make the save, but after leaning to his right, he was left flat-footed for an animated shot that skipped off the slick grass and flew past him.
