Class S girls: Canton falls to Lops-led Trinity Catholic 52-45

The seventh-seeded Crusaders took her energy and ran with it against top-seeded Canton, which was playing in its fourth championship game in the last five years at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Despite a Canton rally at the end of the game, Trinity Catholic won its first girls basketball state title since 2006, 52-45.

Canton (26-2) got the rematch it wanted after losing to Trinity Catholic (22-5) last year in the first round of the Class S tournament, 44-43.

Saturday, Canton, which last won the title in 2017, looked to be in control early, hitting its outside shots and taking an 18-10 lead after a quarter.

But Lops stormed back in the second and her three-pointer with 4:38 left in the half gave the Crusaders a 23-20 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Medeiros decided to press and Canton crept back into the game, forcing turnovers – Trinity Catholic had 17 – and cut the lead to seven a few times.
