BU skates past Lowell in Hockey East opener

Jake Oettinger made 25 saves to tie the school record with his 13th shutout as fifth-seeded Boston University blanked 18th-ranked and fourth-seeded UMass Lowell, 3-0, in the first game of a best-of-three Hockey East tournament quarterfinal Friday night at Tsongas Center.

Joel Farrabee opened the scoring at 6:24 of the second period, his 14th goal of the season, redirecting a shot from Dante Fabbro.

3 seed Northeastern (24-10-1), ranked ninth in the nation, got past sixth-seeded Maine (15-16-4) in the opener of a best-of-three Hockey East tournament quarterfinal at Matthews Arena.

Lincoln Griffin took advantage of a turnover to claim the puck in the left corner of Maine’s defensive zone, feeding a pass to Madden at the right dot for the wrister.

Regular-season conference champion UMass, ranked third in the nation, had to come back from an early deficit after UNH scored three second-period goals to take a three-goal lead.

Defenseman Adam Fox put Harvard in front at 11:51 of the third period, jumping into the rush to finish off a give and go with sophomore forward Colton Kerfoot.
