Georgetown 96, PC 90: Friars fumble away a win in DC

That is the age-old basketball conundrum that PC coach Ed Cooley and his staff faced late in regulation of Saturday’s Big East game at Georgetown.

After making the decision to foul with a three-point lead, the Friars watched Mac McClung elude a defender and bank in a game-tying 40-footer with three seconds to play.

Holding a four-point lead with 15 seconds left, more mistakes let the Hoyas rally with James Akinjo making a clutch 3-point shot to force another extra session.

With the door opened for a third chance, the Hoyas sent the Friars home by making all the key plays in the second overtime to escape with a 96-90 victory.

That was too much time remaining for Cooley to foul and Akinjo found himself wide open after a high ball screen and the freshman from California knocked down a tying 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds.

Cooley called his final timeout but the Friars couldn’t come through as the execution was sloppy and Diallo missed a deep 3-pointer.
