Celtics make deep splash, escape from Nets tangle

Their star missed his seventh game of the season Monday night, this time with a strained left hip, and the shots simply had to come from somewhere else.

“Those are our Splash Brothers,” Brad Stevens said one game after losing to the two originals – Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

This time they surrendered a 38-point third quarter, including a 17-2 Nets run that wiped out a 12-point Celtics lead and concluded with three consecutive 3-pointers from D’Angelo Russell.

The Celtics made amends down the stretch, limiting Brooklyn to 16 points on 41 percent shooting in the fourth.

According to stat guru Dick Lipe, it was only the ninth time since 2000 that an NBA team has had at least 16 blocks and 11 assists in the same game.

Not only did they continue taunting Smart, daring him to shoot, they hit the Celtics with perhaps the most zone coverage they have seen this season.
