Auburn opens SEC schedule at Ole Miss as the hunted, not the hunter

On the first day of Auburn’s SEC schedule last season, Bruce Pearl entered Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee, wearing a shirt with “4-14” stamped in bold letters across the front.

It’s safe to say Pearl won’t be wearing that shirt again when he enters The Pavilion at Ole Miss for Auburn’s 2018-19 SEC opener on Wednesday.

When the SEC held its first coaches teleconference this past Thursday, Pearl received only one question from reporters.

They were picked to finish dead last in the conference in their first season under coach Kermit Davis, but they’re off to an 11-2 start with two KenPom top-80 wins over Baylor at a neutral site and Vanderbilt on the road this past Saturday.

Ole Miss is led by veteran guards Breein Tyree and Terence Davis, who are averaging 18.4 and 15.2 points per game, respectively, to lead an offense than ranks 24th nationally in efficiency, per KenPom.

I still feel like we’re slept on as individual players and as a team, so we’re kind of using that as our fire going into SEC play,” point guard Jared Harper said.
