St. John Bosco quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has been named the Gatorade California Football Player of the Year, it was announced on Thursday morning.

The award, handed out annually, honors the best football player in the state for performance on the field, character and academics.

As a junior, Uiagalelei led Bosco to a 13-1 record and the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship game.

He declines to talk about his individual stats, and spends much of his time on social media promoting teammates as they look to get scholarships.

For Negro, though, Uiagalelei’s signature performance came in Bosco’s seven-point win over JSerra, when the Braves and their quarterback both didn’t have their best stuff.

“I think what it lets people know and understand is that we’ve become a national brand,” said Negro, who just completed his eighth season as the head coach at his alma mater.
