Just Askin' | The early-Thanksgiving effect

Christmas pajamas are seen on display Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at Macy's at Market Place Mall in Champaign.

Q: Does Thanksgiving falling so early affect how much people spend on Christmas gifts?

But Ana Serafin Smith, a spokeswoman for the National Retail Federation, said, "It really doesn't make too much of a difference."

"By Thanksgiving, the majority of Americans are at their halfway point of shopping for the holidays," Smith said.

Indeed, Christmas lawn ornaments are already for sale at Lowe's, for example, and Market Place Mall has started decorating for the season.

"Just today, Target announced that their Black Friday sales are starting now," Smith said Thursday.
